CDI Solutions partnered with First Castle Federal Credit Union to design a branch that reflects the institution’s rich history and unique origins. Established in 1934 as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New Orleans District, First Castle is the fifth federally chartered credit union in the nation and the first for the Army Corps of Engineers. Its emblem, a castle, symbolizes strength and resilience, deeply tied to its heritage. CDI Solutions embraced this legacy by incorporating design elements that celebrate the credit union’s foundational history and its identity.

The branch’s design pays homage to the engineering expertise of the Army Corps of Engineers. Working with the architect, CDI Solutions adopted an open-ceiling and open-space concept, showcasing the building’s structural elements and systems. Exposed beams and mechanical components became intentional focal points, emphasizing the engineering theme. This innovative approach was complemented by a hybrid teller system, blending traditional banking with modern retail and concierge services. The addition of a tube system, typically found in drive-throughs but adapted for interior use, further reinforced the engineering motif and added a functional, dynamic element to the lobby.

Furnishings and finishes were carefully chosen to align with the structured aesthetic associated with the Army Corps of Engineers. Masculine shapes, clean lines, and the credit union’s brand colors were woven throughout the furniture and accent paints, creating a cohesive and visually impactful environment. Lighting played a key role, with mechanical-style pendant lights highlighting the exposed structural elements, perimeter accent lighting emphasizing key features, and ambient lighting enhancing the open architecture. These details worked together to establish a functional yet inspiring atmosphere.

Beyond design, CDI Solutions curated an art package that connected the branch to its local community. Photographs reflecting the area’s culture and history were printed on canvases and strategically placed throughout the branch, enhancing its aesthetic and creating a sense of place for members and visitors. Wayfinding and signage also contributed to the seamless member experience, with comprehensive exterior and interior signage ensuring clarity and cohesion. Together, these elements crafted a space that honors First Castle’s heritage while providing a modern, inviting environment for its members.
