The Children’s NICU Play Area is a prime example of how thoughtful design can combine functionality, safety, and a calming atmosphere to benefit young patients and their families. This 202-square-foot space, meticulously crafted by CDI Solutions, was designed to offer a peaceful and joyful environment within a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) high-stress setting. At the heart of the design is an immersive underwater theme that draws inspiration from the existing NICU facility. The carpet was chosen to mimic the ocean floor, creating a soothing and imaginative space for children. Playful sea creatures, including seahorses, sea turtles, dolphins, and starfish, are integrated into the design to entertain children while maintaining continuity with the NICU's room identifiers. This thematic approach helps create a cohesive and welcoming environment for young patients and their families.

A standout feature of the play area is the custom millwork, shaped like kelp, bubbles, and waves, which adds visual interest and height to the space. These elements ensure the area remains open and accessible for easy supervision. Incorporating 360-degree security ceiling mirrors, creatively designed as “bubbles,” allows parents in the adjacent waiting area to monitor their children easily. This innovative combination of custom millwork and vector graphics enhances the visual appeal and ensures young users' safety and security. Durability and cleanliness were paramount in the design. High-pressure laminates were specified for the walls and furniture, chosen for their ability to withstand wear and tear in a busy play area. Bumper guards and rounded wall top caps in coordinating colors were added to protect the millwork and ensure user safety. A wave wainscot, custom-designed to carry the underwater theme into the play area, adds visual continuity and practical protection.

Interactive elements were carefully selected to provide the children with fun and therapeutic benefits. A custom kelp-framed fun house mirror, an interactive magnetic sand table with toy boats, and a rotating maze featuring a NICU fish character were integrated into the space to engage children and stimulate their senses. Round liquid floor tiles embedded into the existing flooring create a sensory experience by moving when touched, reinforcing the underwater theme and providing additional interactive elements. Commercial play equipment was chosen to accommodate children of varying ages and abilities, ensuring the space was inclusive and accessible. Tables and chairs were thoughtfully arranged to cater to children with special needs, emphasizing the play area’s commitment to inclusivity.

The play area not only provides a space for children to play but also offers an escape for families navigating the stresses of the NICU. The whimsical sea creatures, created from laminate-clad millwork panels and the water-like metal laminate accents, bring both durability and charm to the space. Combined with deep sea kelp and bubbles made using vector graphics, these elements contribute to the serene and playful atmosphere. The Children’s NICU Play Area exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform a healthcare space. CDI Solutions achieved a balance that fosters physical and emotional well-being by incorporating elements that spark children's imaginations while prioritizing safety and durability.
