Welcoming Functionality

CDI Solutions is proud to present its transformative design for Magnolia Assisted Living, a 24,702-square-foot community facility that stands as a benchmark for inclusive, sustainable, and aesthetically driven spaces. With a project budget of $3.0 million, our firm was tasked with creating an environment that caters to the diverse needs of its residents while ensuring functionality, sustainability, and a welcoming atmosphere.

Personalized Spaces

One of the defining features of our design was the innovative use of floor patterns to establish different “neighborhoods” within the facility. This thoughtful approach to spatial organization enhanced the facility’s layout, making it easier for residents to navigate while fostering a strong sense of community and belonging. By visually segmenting the space, we were able to create distinct, intimate areas within a large footprint, giving residents a more personalized and comfortable environment.

Adaptive Lighting

Lighting played a crucial role in enhancing both the functionality and sustainability of the facility. With an aging-in-place strategy in mind, we selected a variety of lighting solutions that not only accommodate the needs of older adults but also prioritize energy efficiency. The integration of LED lighting, dimmable fixtures, and task lighting provided optimal illumination for different activities while minimizing energy consumption. This lighting strategy not only elevated the facility’s ambiance but also contributed to its overall sustainability, aligning with Magnolia Assisted Living’s commitment to energy conservation.

Local & Sustainable Choices

Sustainability was at the heart of our design approach for Magnolia Assisted Living. To reduce the project’s environmental footprint, we implemented various eco-friendly strategies, including using recycled materials in flooring and upholstery. We also prioritized regionally manufactured materials for millwork and furniture, reducing transportation emissions and supporting local businesses. A dedicated recycling collection area was also integrated into the facility to encourage sustainable waste management practices among staff and residents. Our commitment to sustainability extended to indoor air quality as well. By specifying low-emitting adhesives and sealants and eliminating carpet adhesives, we ensured a healthier indoor environment. The use of Sherwin-Williams’ Greenguard Certified “Harmony” interior latex paint further supported this goal, providing low-VOC paints and primers throughout the facility to promote better air quality for residents and staff.

Comfort & Accessibility

Furnishings were selected with both durability and user comfort in mind. High-durability furniture with arms and firm cushions was chosen to assist residents with mobility challenges, ensuring ease of use and long-term resilience. The upholstery featured moisture barriers and antimicrobial properties, which helped maintain hygiene and extended the life of the furniture. Additionally, the layout exceeded minimum requirements for paths and turning radii, providing easy movement for residents using wheelchairs, walkers, or canes, and ensuring that the space was fully accessible.

Engaging, Inclusive Areas

Recognizing the growing importance of digital inclusion, we designed multiple “web cafés” within the public areas of the facility. These spaces were equipped with computers and internet access, offering residents a chance to stay connected and socially engaged. The web cafés became vibrant hubs of activity, encouraging digital literacy and fostering community interaction. Art played a central role in personalizing the space, with CDI Solutions curating a selection of canvas-wrapped photography from the Gonzales area. These locally inspired pieces brought the history and culture of the region into the heart of the facility, creating a deeper sense of place for both residents and visitors.

Designing for Quality Life

In conclusion, the design of Magnolia Assisted Living exemplifies CDI Solutions’ dedication to creating spaces that balance functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal. Through innovative design elements such as neighborhood-style layouts, energy-efficient lighting, custom millwork, and sustainable practices, we delivered a facility that not only meets the needs of its residents but enhances their quality of life. This project serves as a testament to our firm’s commitment to excellence, transforming spaces into vibrant, functional, and welcoming environments that foster a sense of community and well-being.
